I have a general question, I have a 1998 Evinrude 90hp. My question is, Is there differance between cleaning a set of carb's and rebuilding a set of carb's. I thoiught you just rebuilt carb's. I took my motor in to have the carb's done, I was asked did I need my carb's cleaned or rebuilt. Which confused the life out of me.

Thanks, Mav

I would think rebuilding means replacement of all "wear" parts in the carb; Floats, pins, gaskets, etc.
Cleaning would be just that, cleaning in a dip of some sort.
Personally, If I were going to take my carbs apart to clean them, I would just go ahead and rebuild them also, since most if not all of the parts are already out (or should be if done correctly).

Sort of an odd question for a mechanic to ask; really. He'd have been better off asking questions relating to the issues you were noticing, and perhaps relating to the service history of your engine; the carbs in particular.

It's a fine line really where "cleaning" ends and "rebuilding" starts. With the simplest of cleaning....even the gaskets aren't replaced; the bowl is dropped and the obvious passages are cleaned. Float condition and needle and seat operation might be checked; but no parts are replaced. Many times this is all that is needed; especially if the engine has seen regular maintenance.

"Rebuilding" starts with a "rebuild kit" which usually contains gaskets, needle and seat, new float (sometimes) and the variety of other bushings and seals that are known to deteriorate. The mechanic replaces all the parts; usually after a more aggressive cleaning (sometimes an overnight soak).

Rebuilding; to an experienced mechanic, is not really defined. It's his job to decide what needs to be done; what parts need to be replaced. Sometimes parts outside of the rebuild kit are deemed faulty and replaced as well.

I could not see any additional labor costs for rebuilding. As egclassic said all the parts should be out anyway.
So yes, rebuild.
