Im on my 3rd coat in 3 yrs and it sure does make a difference. A lazy man will always find the easy way to get it done.

Hey guys,

Why not revive an old thread when it talks about something so useful?? Anyways, I went out and bought three "tubs" of generic petroleum jelly. I guess I was picturing five gallons of the stuff. It hasn't come in the mail yet , but I tried using some of the little bit I had here at home. Here is a pic of the results. You can clearly see which parts of the boat have not had the jelly applied. I am so happy with the results. I wonder though... how long will it take for this stuff to dry? Oh well, if I have to reapply every month, that beats reapplying a cut, polish, wax every other month. 100_4555.jpg

Looks good Tyler. Leave it on for a day or two then wipe/buff until it is dry to the touch. It won't dry out by itself.

The most heavily oxidized parts of my boat (top of bow) needs a re-apply about every 30 days. The side and transom last a full season.

info appreciated .... I've been wondering how often applications would have to take place .... question: if a person applied Vaseline and decided to go with regular wax or some other product in the future, could/would any residual Vaseline complicate doing so

I would assume the Vaseline has found it's way into the porous gelcoat by the time you take wax to it... Hence the need to wipe the Vaseline off after some amount of time. If the surface was still slimy with vaseline, I don't see how wax would adhere to it at all, and when you went to buff the wax you would remove all of it rather then leaving a coating.

Pure speculation, I've never used this method..

You put the vaseline on, let it sit (from hours to days), then wipe it off. The boat is actually dry and not the least bit slimy at this point. You can then just do a regular wax job.

Tomorrow, I am going to give buffing a shot and then I will wax on top of what I have.

Re: Cleaning/Waxing boat with Vaseline???

We use vaseline on our boat, BUT it is stored outside on the trailer and when it rains, the vaseline comes off and reveals the oxidation that it covered up! Now, we haven't used boat wax after wipping the vaseline off, so that may be our problem.......not sure. From what I understand, the vaseline does NOT remove the oxidation, only covers it up. If a boat is stored inside, where no rain will hit it, then the vaseline shouldn't come off. Again, we haven't waxed the boat after wipping the vaseline off so that is what we will try the next time we do the vaseline thing. Oh, BTW, we do have a full cover on our boat, but the rain still hits part of the sides of it and that's where the rain takes the vaseline off and the oxidation shows up again.
We decided to go with the vaseline b/c it is so much easier for us to do. We are in our mid 60's and trying to wipe/buff the oxidation off of the boat was WAY to much for us to do. AND, we don't have the finances to have it done.

You are right, it does not really remove oxidation. However, rain should not wash off the vaseline. It used to last a few months for me during boating season. Put it on generously and leave it on for a few days. Try a coat of wax after you have wiped it dry. If it is cold where you live, try softening/melting the vaseline by putting the container in hot wateruntil it thins a little.

I recently spent the 10+ hours to sand, compound, polish, and wax and it looks great. However, vaseline is a great alternative if you don't have the time or energy to embark on a tough paint restoration project.

I should re-phrase what I said...........rain washed off the vaseline coating after we wiped the vaseline off. When our rain lightens up, afternoon rain almost each day right now, we will put a coat of wax on the boat after we vaseline it and wipe the vaseline off.
