Salt (NaCl) is water soluble.

The real issues is that most of the "salt" you see is a combination of chloride, sodium, sulfate, calcium, potassium and magnesium salt deposits.

The calcium, potassium and magnesium deposits are the tough ones.

We use chemicals (acids) designed to clean industrial boilers when flushing the aluminum cooling jackets on our equipment.

Monitoring the pH of the cleaning solution is critical to it's effectiveness.
We're not certified chemists to know the composition of the marine salt, usually it's referred as salt accumulations. Assume the boilers works with fresh water like giant kettles, correct ?

An 8 HP can idle in a barrel ( 45 gallon ) for about 1 hr before heat might be a concern.

Have heard numerous times here on Iboats, "do not run a I/O in a can"
Just a small 8hp 2/ AD. I use a wheelie bin (like a garbage bin on wheels) to run it in, if I ever need to start it away from the water.

Water is water, no matter where you are. My comment was directed at running in a bucket. Unless the bucket has a flow of cold water it will cause the engine to eventually run too hot. And if it DOES have the cold flow, the chemical formula will get diluted.

Regardless, if you have to do all the chemical maintenance and turning the hose on and off it will totally screw up the time for drinking beer and conversing with the neighbor.

To be forgiven AD. I have far too many boats and engines for most to keep up. 6 boats and 8 engines at last count. It’s an affliction !
Pfffft, 6 boats and 69 engines. Of course, 5 of them don't run.

Haha. Excellent...More accurate for me, would be 7 running, one blocked with salt and one missing a mid section from it. Call it 7 and two halves as we are now, haha.

Lots to consider then. Had no idea this would require so much thought...especially around the beer !!

Maybe you aren't, but I am.

Some people think of "salt" as being sodium chloride. Yes, it is....and that's what you buy to put on your pastrami in the grocery store. If that were the case, running an engine in a hot water bucket would solve the problem.

Furthermore, if that were the case, Ocean water would be potable all day long. Try drinking your "salt water" next time you go for a boat ride...

Exactly........ Two beers is only 15 minutes unless its 95 out..... Then again it doeant get to 95 in scotland

Most of us mere mortal boaters don't know which other elements are contained in sea water which varies from ocean to ocean. More salt contents is found in tropical, equatorian waters due to more water evaporation increasing much more the % of salt cotents which for boating activities is bad and will need to be removed sooner or later.

Anyway excessive salt layers or crusts will eventually screw your nice boating day, on large HP motors will make the rev limiter to kick in prematurely and repetitively and on portable motors to overheat severely and leave you stranded on your way to Bermuda...

There is a lot of ---GOLD----Dissolved it the oceans.----I challenged the 10 year old grandson to figure out an economical way to get it all out.-----He would become a trillionaire.----Yes , google it and see the staggering amount of it in all the cubic miles of ocean water.-----

I remember talking about that at the University (and I won't admit how long ago that was). The problem is that the equipment capital cost is staggering, and the cost of operation exceeds the return from selling the gold.

Kinda like the energy to manufacture ethanol exceeds the BTU output when run in a car. That's funny too, because in our senior year we all had to design an ethanol plant. What did they know back then?

That also reminds me of the proposals to run cars on hydrogen. Wonder what happened to that?

But it is fun to challenge a 10 year old with something like that.----His first response was ---" it is heavy and he would have to scrape it off the ocean bottom "----I also challenged him to learn to build a factory where you would make MILK.------Pour water and hay in at one end and various chemicals along the way.----Butter , milk and cheese would come out the back door.----No cows needed.-----It helps to make kids think.----So I do not believe there is a majick potion that will 90% clean the internals of an outboard while running in a barrel.

saw grass alcohol has a higher BTU content than corn alcohol, and cane sugar alcohol is higher yet. however the subsidies are what they are.....

fuel cells dont like freezing temps.

Cane sugar alcohol is higher yet. I know now why my fuel pump's internal diphragms balloons much faster and the fuel filter yellows more on E-8 fuels.​

Not as simple as that really. Used to run a steam ship engine room years ago. Daily testing was required of the water. Very controlled and regulated system by means of chemical dosing. But we digress a little. Haha.
