Clicking noise with starter and tilt

I have just started diagnosing this but would like some input; this started last year but is getting progressively worse. I have a Yamaha ytlr70 and occasionally when I hit tilt switch or turn key to start I get a clicking noise but no start or tilt. When this error occurs, I do not get voltage to the starter motor so I am ruling the starter out. I am thinking a bad relay assembly but I see 2 of them on that motor.

It looks like the larger of the 2 feeds both the starter motor and tilt switch so that's my guess but would like some input before I order a $125 part.

Thanks in advance! Happy Saturday!

Re: Clicking noise with starter and tilt

Check to see if you have voltage going into the relay and then coming out of it when it is engaged or you hear it click. That would be an easy way of checking that. Make your self a jumper wire and just walk through the system testing and eliminating stuff. This is what I do in the aviation field. One big wire with alligator clips on both end. If you think you have a bad relay just bypass it with the jumper wire and see if your tilt engages or your starter.

I had the same thing on my 85HP Yamaha. Intermittent clicking on start or using the tilt/trim.

Turns out I had dirty/loose connection at the battery.

Cleaned the connection, tightened them down real good, problem went away.

I agree wit Jdlough With any marine electrical issue, Clean all contacts and lugs prior to changing any parts out.
