I have an 88 evinrude with a manual lift that has a clicking sound. The engine runs smooth at idle with that clicking sound. When you reve the engine up it gets much worse and chugs like it is miss firing. The sound is coming from the main engine. Spark plugs have been replaced and new gas incase it was water im the fuel tank.

Any ideas what this could be?

Sometimes fuel pumps click, however, they are not real loud. Did you remove the spark plugs and rotate the engine with a wrench and feel/listen for the click?

You might remove the cowl and start her in a barrel to minimize exhaust noise. Maybe you can isolate the click to a particular part of the motor. Look for loose parts vibrating.

Hopefully it is something simple and you can ID it.
