Clicking then gears engage.

My boat ran fine. I hit something and my Alpha 1 out drive broke. I replaced the entire outdrive with a used one. It seams to be working fine, but when I shift it into gear, it clicks until I give it a little more throttle then the gears engage. How do I fix this or is this outdrive bad?

Sounds like your shift cable is out of adjustment or has failed.

What would cause it to go out of alignment? I took the old out drive off and put a new out drive on. Is each out drive different?

the shift linkage inside the new (used) drive might have a bit more slack in it. The lower shift cable likely needs to be adjusted to make up for this difference.
