I was given an old 9 HP outboard which simply says the word "CLINTON" on the outside cover.

It seems to turn over just fine, however I have not tried to start it yet because I am not sure what fuel ratio to use.

Can you provide any help or give me some direction where I could look to find out who made this engine and what the proper fuel ratio would be?

ANY help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Clinton ( horse out board

I am not aware that Clinton ever made an outboard as big as 9hp, but I don't know everything.

Clinton outboards were made by Clinton. They were well established as builders of 4-stroke lawn mower engines. Then they added chainsaws (2-stroke) to their line. Then they adapted the chainsaw powerhead to outboards and Viola!

The chainsaws ran on 16:1 mix. I see no excuse for running the outboard on any less. The outboard actually runs hotter than the saw did.

Parts and info at CEPCO (formerly Clinton Engines) 605 E maple Maquoketa, Iowa 52060. If you phone you may get info with contact info. Be patient. Ph 563-652-2411. FAX 563-652-3427.
