Re: Clipper Circuit

on my 72 Evinrude (If I remember correctly) it was in the control box, and it just comprises of a diode.

Re: Clipper Circuit

now by control box do you mean the power block with the 12 terminals or the strip thing above the power block

No, not on the motor, In the control box that contains the throttle lever and shift buttons (where you control the motor when you are driving). It seems to me mine was lodged in under the shift buttons.

Whoa guys----too much mis-information here.

1. There is no clipper circuit on a 1972 65hp. Doesn't need one because it has mag CD ignition.

2. If it did have one, it would be on the powerhead, not in the control box. That diode in the control box is called a blocking diode and has an entirely different purpose.

3. There is no blocking diode on a 1972 65hp. Same reason as #1

Re: Clipper Circuit

You do have at least an unregulated rectifier and if it is bad or missing then you will not have a charge.

You can test it using the method outlined here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=190638

Re: Clipper Circuit

i also read that these engines have a 9 amp charging system or something how do i convert it to the 15 amp system or more for that matter to run accessories im going to be installing a livewell and will need to be able to power the lights, arreator, bilge, radio, and be able to charge the battery

what type of charging system is on a 1972 65HP generator or alternator and where is it located?

It is an alternator and the heart of it is the stator located under the flywheel. The 3 big coils charge the ignition system and the 6 small ones charge the battery. The rectifier, previous picture posted, converts the AC produced in the stator to DC for charging the battery.

Couldn't get a picture of the correct stator for your motor but this is similar:

Re: Clipper Circuit

thanks so if the battery isnt getting a charge but the motor runs its more than likely the rectifier is shot then right

Still many permutations of possible faults. That's why you need a systematic approach to troubleshooting thse systems. Could still be the stator or something else.
Part replacement is an expensive sport even if you are playing the "home version" of the game...and trial and error is not the best way to do it....especially that vintage of motor. I had a slightly earlier version of that motor and blame many of my gray hairs on OMC's design group...;)

Are you reading from the right service manual and are you sure of your motor model and year? What is the model number?

The 60hp engine from previous 2 years used a clipper circuit with it's battery CD points-type ignition. The 65 has a Mag-Flash magneto powered CDI.

That's correct. Besides, it's very easy to check an unregulated rectifier with an ohmmeter.
