Clogged tell tale on 2000 C50 TLRY

I have had my tell tale clog up twice now with small shell fragments. The intake screen in the lower unit is in tact completely, however it still gets something lodged in the very end of the tell tale. On my old omc they replaced the little fitting that the tell tale hose hooked to with just a grommet, is there a particular reason the end fitting needs to be such a small passage? Think I could fit a grommet in here to hold the hose in place?

My guess is you have scale on the internal passages breaking loose and plugging it up.
Not sure but I think the restriction is there to hold back pressure on the system so it does not dump too much water so there is plenty for cooling in the motor.

My C40TLRX has the same problem from time to time, but usually I just run a piece if weed whacker line up it I keep in boat while running motor and it clears it out.
If that does not take care of it or it still does not flow with good force, I blow compressed air up it, but That is not available all the time

Think I could fit a grommet in here to hold the hose in place?

but then the mud dobbers would just plug it up anyway

If you continue to plug up the fitting, you might try this. We've had several instances of fuel coolers plugging up on four strokes so we've started installing small inline fuel filters to catch sand and such. Doesn't affect the flow but will catch anything that might plug things up.

The fuel filter is a good idea...I actually might have a small filter from an R/C boat I used to have. I use the boat frequently enough, almost every weekend, that mud dobbers have never been a problem. I usually don't run through the flats shallow enough to stir up the sand but had to a couple times recently and it seems to have ingested a bit of sand that is still working through...atleast I'm glad it isn't something more like an impeller or t-stat. Thanks for the ideas!
