On a recent post, I saw mention that a Johnson 4 stroke was a repainted Suzuki. What other motors are just repainted Japanese motors? How about mercury, I saw parts somewhere that were listed Yamaha, or Mercury. I am thinking about going to 4 stroke, maybe a Merc.
Walt

Re: clones?

You got it, most merc 4 strokes are really yamis. Even the new 225. Nothin wrong with that though, yami builds a killer 4 stroke.

Re: clones?

It would be very interesting to myself, and perhaps everyone that is ignorant on the subject (as I am) exactly what all motors are the same as another, and to what extent they are identical, as to (a) just being bsed on same design, (b) Some parts interchanged, or (c) just different paint sceme.
Thanks for any and all replies.
Walt

Re: clones?

The only ones I know are:

Johnson - Evinrude
Tohatsu - Nissan
Mercury - Mariner
Force - Old Chrysler technology

There's also the repainted suzuki's and yamimerc's.
I imagine there's possibly another combination but that all I can think of  .

lakeman,

Evinrude four strokes are built by Suzuki.

Merc. uses many Yamaha powerheads. The lower units are Merc.

Honda uses Merc. lower units.

Re: clones?

Hmmm.

Things have changed a lot in recent years.

Up until the late 90s Johnson and Evinrude engines were pretty much the same. That includes the OMC made small 4 strokes in 8, 9.9 and 15HP.

Then OMC introduced the Ficht direct injection technology on some Johnsons, some Evinrudes.

At about the same time OMC started buying 4 stroke engines from Suzuki and badging them as Evinrudes. They dropped the OMC designed 4 strokes.

Then OMC crashed and was sold to Bombardier.

Bomb made some changes. They rebadged the Suzuki 4 strokes as Johnsons. The parts are interchangable BUT do not have the same part numbers.

The direct injection systems are now offered only on Evinrudes and no longer called Ficht.

The basic long blocks of Johnson and Evinrude 2 strokes are the same, but Johnnys are carbs only.

Next will be E-Tech Evinrudes and bigger 4 stroke Johnsons (still made by Suzi.)

Both Yamaha and Mercury sell a mix of Yammy and Merc parts on many engines.

Tohatsu makes little engines, 2 and 4 stroke, for several other badges.

Beyond that there is more sharing of parts and technology by many makers. I gave up trying to keep track of it.

Confused? me too.
