Re: Close encounters with whales

Personally,.......... I haven't been That close to 1..........

But,.......
About 10 years ago, I was back in Maine fishing for Mackerel with my Mom in Dad's old 14' boat,+ 8hp motor, trolling around Frenchman's Bay,........
We got within about 100yds of a Whale swimming through,.........
Mom decided that was Close Enough, viewing from a Boat that was Smaller than the Whale.........

I was on a boat with a friend and his daughter when one stuck his (or her) head out of the water no more than 15' away to check us out. My friend and his daughter hit the deck with her screaming. I laughfed so hard I had tears streaming down my face. Even though they are pretty commen around here, you never get used to them popping up next to you. Really spectacular when they breach.

I work on a research boat, and we occasionally do whale tagging. We get pretty close, sometimes within an arms length of the whales. We've also done a necropsy at sea, where we tied the whale up to the side of the boat while the scientists where working on it. Dead whales STINK.

2 years ago I was sailing around Guadaloupe with my family in a 36 foot catamaran and we actually hit a whale.. The auto pilot was on and we where sunning ourselves on the deck and there was a large bank and the whole boat moved, we quickly looked around to see what we had hit (there was nothing around us for miles) and there was a solitary whale about 12 feet behind us just at the surface of the water.. We hope we didn't hurt the whale, but it didn't stop for us to check..

It was quite exciting for a few minutes..

You need to come up to the San Juans and take a look at our Killer Whale (Orca Pods) . They are not afraid of boats and will come very close. We now have laws that prohibit boats from getting too close or chasing the pods. I have been in the area and when I se them I just shut off the motor and they swim by on all sides of the boat. I have never had one hit my boat. My wife gets a little up tight when they are that close. Definately a beautiful sight.
We have a lot of black porposes here and some are black and white just like thier bigger cousins, I had one of the come close and tap off the bow with thier tail.

Hey gss,
How about passing some laws that prohibit " indians" from killing them ?

This year we had 2 Humpback whale surface 20 yards from our boat, all we saw was 2 huge mouths coming out of the water, pretty scary stuff the first time.

There was a sea lion that jumped into a boat off Castle Rock here. The husband went into the cabin looking for his pistol while his wife beat on the sea lion with a pdddle. He finally got his pistol but no ammo. Meanwhile the wife had purswaded the the sea lion to leave. Scary but funny. They can be quite agressive.
