closed cooling question

on a 1993 mercruiser 454 in a 76 searay, is it possible to do away with the closed cooling system? the boat will only be exposed to fresh water..

Yes it can be done.But why??? The motor will last longer with the closed system, even in fresh water.J

....and it's a whole lot simplier to winterize: that is, if you ever have winter in California !!!!

Keep it. You engine can run at a higher temp which is way nore efficient.

I added a San Juan Closed cooling system to my 454. It is incredibly easy to winterize. It also will run better and the engine will last longer with closed cooling.

Unless you have a heat exchanger problem, you should keep it..

Keep it and be sure to put a 180 deg thermostat in it. Marine engines run too cool (w/oem stats) for optimal combustion chamber efficiency.

...and yes, it can freeze in Central CA!

The only reason to not put in a 180 deg stat is if you have EFI. They are programmed for OEM temp thermostats.
