Why have it standard on the engine? They'll make more profit if people buy it as an option, and if they don't, then Merc have a ready made customer in a few years time.

Chris...............
cynical? who, me?

Re: Closed Cooling....?

This was on another forum:I looked into this myself last year. Here's what George told me. If it's been used in salt water for more than 150hrs then forget it. It's too late. If it's been in fresh water OR if it's been in salt water for less then 150 hrs then you will want to take off the thermostat housing and do a visual inspection. If the block is in good shape inside then you can acid flush the block and install a FWC kit. If the block is crusty and flaking inside then it's probrably too late to add FWC to the engine. I hope this helps some.

Re: Closed Cooling....?

two reasons seem to come up for not going for closed system cooling on older engines.. three perhaps if u include the cost.. one is the flakey rust coming of the block and bunging up the heat exchanger the other is its bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted and is a waste of time..

it does seem only a half measure being as it dosnt rust proof the manifolds.. i am open minded about it and wouldnt say yes or no to doing it..

i recon its a shame that more boats dont come with a little better corrosion protection in the first place thow..

trog100

Couldn't agree more. That said, Mercruisers aren't too bad now-a-days, and have been that way for the last 10 years.

As for offering FWC as an option (not sure about now), but when I was looking for my new engine in 1994 OMC didn't even have an option for it. It was salt water cooled or nothing.

Chris........
