Hello I'm not an outboard owner (I/O) so please don't laugh too hard, a buddy of mine
had his 10 yr old 175 hp winterized the mechanic who did it said that checked his rings through an inspection plate and saw that the were "couldy" this makes no sense to me and I haven't been able to talk directly with the guy.. but is this possible?? could he check the rings without
taking off the power head?? I hope there is just some confusion and it's just the lower end fluid or something... but the Quote was 800.00 for a repair....

thanks
and regards,
schooner -dave

Yes you can check the cylinder and the top of the piston without removing the powerhead..But to do it right you need a borescope. Sort of like a mini microscope for engines..Use them in aviation all the time. But it just gives you part of the story...Not all of it.

What your guy means by couldy.. I dont have a clue!!!

You can get a peek at a small area of the bore/rings by removing the exhaust plate. Or you could pull a cylinder head to see a lot more of the bore. Cloudy? That is the first time I've heard that one!

The bore scopes sell a lot of parts, The only thing I would be concerned about on a 2 stroke outboard is the compression and how it sounded at 5000 rpms under load. What brand of engine?
