Clutch dog cross pin

I'm rebuilding gear case on 2008 50hp ELPTO. I cannot get the cross pin out of the clutch dog. Am I missing something. I thought once the retainer spring is off, the pin should just push out.

Push the cam follower against a solid object while you grasp the clutch dog and push toward the stationary object. You have to unload the spring pressure. Same thing applies when re-asembling.

Thanks. I did push the cam follower in but I didn't think of pushing the clutch dog back against it. It just seems so solid in there even after tapping it with a punch. Will give it a try.

The manual, my 2015 revised edition of the manual for engines dating back in the late '90's and later, shows a couple of pictures and verbiage addressing this specific subject. Apparently it is a problem if you don't follow the procedure they outlined. Good luck.

I don't have the manual for this exact model but the one I have isn't very clear. Just says to remove the pin. So what kind of problems does it mention?

It doesn't mention a problem, just eludes to an interference fit resistance type thing since it contains verbiage and shows a picture of the point of the cam follower up against a solid object (for pushing against) and a persons fingers around the clutch dog, not the prop shaft, and an arrow pointing toward the solid object for direction of movement of the dog, and a punch in the other hand to push the pin out while relieving the pressure imposed on it by the internal spring.

No luck. Even tried putting a little screw driver in slot to help with leverage to push the dog back towards the end and tapping pin with hammer and punch. It's moved about an 1/8" but won't budge any farther. Just feels too solid to come out without using heavy force

I'm rebuilding this because the cam shift was worn and it wouldn't engage reverse. This whole mechanism feels extra hard to move and something doesn't seem right.

Looking in the shaft, I can see the cross pin is worn down to where it has a notch on each side. So something is catching, maybe on the back side. I'm trying everything to work it loose and not having any luck

That makes things more difficult. There may also be a ridge where the gouged out material moved which would prevent the normal removal even if you got what used to be the circumference of the pin lined up with the prop shaft hole. I think it's time for a punch and hammer...using discretion. I'd find some way to keep the clutch dog pushing against the cam follower spring and then start tapping and moving whatever you can move around a bit. The prop shaft is SS and SS is tough but it's hollow there....so don't over do the discretion......try to knock it out in either direction. Good luck.

Yeah, Ive gotten to that point and still not making progress. Something is catching in there and I can't find it. I'll keep at it. Maybe next step is to very carefully drill it out???

Would be a task given the hardness of SS. Do you have a machine shop nearby? I have one and they come in handy for things beyond my capabilities and equipment. Real reasonable and enjoy onesey twosey variations from their "lot" orders that keep them busy.

Cussing is my last and only bad habit. Amazing how a bit of profanity can relieve the stress....just have to ensure that nobody is around......like when you are driving lead headed roofing nails into corrugated tin and hit your finger..........doubt I will be overcoming that any time soon.

Shaft is at the machine shop now and gonna drill the pin out. It looks as if it has wear and also is mushroomed somewhat down in there. If it's now bigger than the hole, that would explain why it's solid when I try to punch it out.

It's out. How much pressure had to be on it to bend it like that.
