Clutch Dog Failure - Why?

I had the post on the '61 18hp Johnson electric start that I am considering buying but needs a clutch dog.

What causes a clutch dog to fail?

The seller said it was because his boat was too heavy for the motor but I don't know if I but it unless he was doing hole shots on a regular basis.

Any info would be helpful.

He says $200 is firm but also doesn't come with a fuel tank. Not sure if it's a good deal.

Gear shift adjustment, improper shifting. You might want to check the price of the dog, used to be about 75-80 bucks. Is there any damage to the drive gear? You might want to try and offer less money, could only be good for a parts motor.

The clutch dog failure is sometimes caused by operator error. You need to snap the shifter into gear in a quick, precise movement. Slowly easing it into gear, letting the dog and gear bang bang bang against one another is a good way to kill that clutch dog quick!

However, it could also be due to worn shift linkages or improper adjustment.

The dogs are not cheap, so keep that in mind. Also, ensure that compression is good, she is sparking, no water intrusion into the lower, etc... before buying.

The dog lists for $67.00 US, and with that gone you can't tell what else is wrong. The dog usually gets worn from slow shifting and/or shifting while idle is set too high. I would not be too surprised to find the gears worn too.

Supposedly I will see the motor running if I end up going to see it.

I priced out the dog and I can get one for about $65 plus whatever seals I need. In addition, I will need a fuel tank.

Having never owned an electric start, are they more desirable then manual start?

Dont want to rain on the parade, but I just finished a 69 18 Evinrude lower unit build.
if the dog is shot, so is the gear. Check THAT price.... I bet the seller has.........
