1957 35hp johnson javelin.

at high speed, motor jumps (like I hit a log) randomly every couple minutes or so. I am assuming the problem is the clutch dog. Is there any other possibility here? previous owner didnt have this problem (motor sat for many yrs).

the dilemna:
i can buy a pressure tested lower unit ($250 from laings outboards) and a clutch dog(to repair my existing lower unit), or i can pay $90/hr to have the problem fixed by a shop. The $250 lower unit has unknown origins, so it might have a bad clutch dog day one, but I'll then have 2 lower units(the new one might have a good clutch dog, and the old one definately will when I put the new clutch dog in)

any idea if I can still find a nos clutch dog for this lower unit?
I think they used the same lower unit 1955-70 in these :
22, 25, 30, 33, 35

A clutch dog is easy to change in that engine, and should not be hard to find.

The problem you're faced with my extend beyond the clutch dog. If the ears on it are worn, the lobes that the ears engage on the forward gear may also be worn. I understand some forward/reverse gears may be swapped. Reverse gear lobes are infrequently worn.

Take it apart and have a look. Won't take but a few minutes.
