Clutch dog question

Ok so I bought a older model Johnson seems like a 69 model 25hp.It ran great when I first got it, still does but the clutch dog started to slip after about the 10th time out. At first I thought I was hitting something when I would go to plane off. Then it did it again in deeper water so I knew I wasn't hitting anything. So my first thought was shift linkage after it popped out of gear on me. Checked the linkage and everything was good. I wasn't familiar with these clutch dogs. Since I've never owned a older model motor. If I had known I may have never bought the motor. Do to the fact that from what I heard these clutch dogs wear out. Anyway I have the the gears out and the shaft and got to the clutch dog. The ears on it are defiantly rounded on the edges. As well as the other side of the dog, so I can't flip it around. So now my question is what dog fits my 69 25hp Johnson motor? I've looked around online and found some dogs for 69 25hp Johnson but none have the slots or grooves on the inside of the dog, like mine does. For that little spring and those two little ball bearings that go between the dog and the shaft. Do I need the spring and two balls on another dog and will it work without them? Need some help please can somebody help locate a clutch dog for me that will fit my motor? I've found some on ebay they look exactly the same except none have the slots on the inside of the dog gear teeth for the spring and two balls to ride on.

Re: Clutch dog question

The snap-shift spring detent didn't come out till 1971, so your motor either isn't a 1969 or modifications have been made. Anyhoo, the dog for a 1971 was part number 316501, which is replaced by 0390030 dog and cradle assembly. Hang onto your hat, it is $142.

IF you presently have a 0390030 in there, and want to replace it with the older 316501, you will have to replace the cradle also.

1969 motors had a 305191 dog (no detents). Will it fit your motor by leaving the detent out? I'm not sure, but probably. Again, the cradle has to be compatible. And the gears and shaft. 305191 is $75. And yes, there were look-similar ones also.

Make sure your forward gear isn't worn. Putting a new dog against a worn gear is a waste of money.

Wow you ain't kidding I lost my hat at those prices. I just can't see spending that kinda money on a motor this old. Yea you are right I do have a 0390030 in there. So your say that if the 305191 fit my 25hp shaft and the cradle fits as well then I would not need the detent spring and balls?

Wow I'm really bummed out about the price. My forward gear has slight wear on the top edge but that's it. The bottom of the gear is square and in good shape....

Pretty much all outboards have the same type of clutch dog mechanism as your motor does. They haven't changed much since then from what I've seen. It's just part of owning a machine that's over 40 years old. I'd either locate a NOS gear set and clutch dog, or locate a GOOD used lower unit (hard to find as well).

If your forward gear shows any kind of wear that should be replaced too.

Re: Clutch dog question

The detent spring and balls were added as an improvement (really is better). It makes the dog tend to snap into engagement with the gear. Well-meaning owners that try to "ease" into gear are a motor's worst enemy. It also ensures that the dog goes all the way in, instead of partway as often happens with worn linkage.

So.....if you revert back to the old style, what you do is lose the benefits. On the other hand, the old style lasted a long time with proper shifting and un-worn out linkage.

Re: Clutch dog question

To extend dog life be sure the motor is at the lowest permissible idle avoid shifts from higher rpms shift crisply, neither dragging it into gear nor jamming it into gear.
Installed correctly it should last another 44 years.

A good machine shop can recut the gear and grind/weld the dog. I have a fellow that does mine.....

Re: Clutch dog question

Not sure where you live, but around here there are a few old boat salvage yards with tons of old boats and motors. If you have one around your area you may find an older clutch dog and most any other lower foot items to fix yours as well. I would try to get a system that uses the spring and balls because they really do help keeping the system in gear and also while in a neutral position too... I do like Faztbullet's suggestion of having a machine shop do the re-weld buildup and then re-machine of your old clutch dog and/or gears as well. Not a bad idea at all...

I understand what yall are saying now. So It seems I could use the older style dogs it's just not as efficient.

Re: Clutch dog question

These motors were made for about 20 years or more.--Then some of the newer " commercial " motor used that style of lower unit.---------Lots of used complete assemblies are available.

If you can find a commercial unit get it as it has the heavy duty gear set and dog which has 3 ramps like higher HP engines
