Hi guys I had my boat out the other day 20 hp 1967 johnson ran great except for one split second, seemed as though I hit something log large fish (clutch dog) only happened once wot the water was muddy so not to sure if a clutch dog would do this just one time ?

Re: clutch dog

Maybe you actually DID hit something. I wouldn't worry too much unless it keeps happening. Did the outboard continue to run OK afterwards? If so, worry about it if it happens again. Otherwise, enjoy your boat.

Re: clutch dog

It could be the clutch-dog jumped, you probably already know they're a week point on the 22.0CID engines. Make sure the shift handle detents are adjusted perfect so you're fully engaging forward.

Keep an eye on your water discharge after raising the engine. Especially at idle.

PS - were you at full throttle at the time? If not, CATransplant is probably right.
