I have a 1990 48hp and have a hard time to shift in reverse or foward it comes back to neutral very easy
Take about 5 pound to push or pull it in gear take no effort toput it in neutral while I hold the shaft in my and is it suppose to be that hard having a hard time putting it in gear while pulling or pushing shiftrod pratically impossible
Is there something im doing wrong
Thanks

Is the motor running while you try and shift ?-----Or if not running are you turning propeller while shifting ?------These lower units are not considered robust .----What does gear oil look like?-----How did it shift for you last season ?

It shifted fine in October
Haven’t it back on the engine it’s nit connected to to shifter
I have changeall the seal and O ring in the bottom and top of gear box all bearing gears and clutch dog looks brand new it got about 100 hours max of run time but the seal and o rimg where original ang leaked
Closed it all tried to shift by pulling on shift rod and only got neutral and reverse
Tore it all down again cheque if the clutch dog was stuck pulled it in gear with my hand and it shifts but it take a good push or pull to get it in gear the small ball that clip it inneutral are making it hard but maybe iam not use to it maybe it suppose to be that once attached to the shifter in will be just normal wanted to make sure so i done have to tear it down again
Thanks for your reply

So, you've been in there, so you know it has those three balls and spring which make up the shifting detent. The purpose is to make it snap firmly into gear. Sounds like it is doing its job.

Pushed shift rod all the way down to try and get forward ?
The rod is small and slippery easier to pull and get reverse because of the hook shape at the end
I will install it in neutral and attaches it to the motor and try it with the shifter see what it does

Unless somebody disagrees, yes that is the way it should be.
