Clutch Dog...

I finally got my 1974 9.9 Johnson running like new. Ran it on the water and now it seems to jump out of gear, and then back in, if I try to turn at higher rpm's. I have been doing some searching on here and it sounds like it could be this clutch dog wearing out. I have never got into a lower unit before. I hear different things about doing this. Some say don't do it unless I plan on spending a lot of money to fix my skrew ups, some say piece of cake. <br /><br />- How difficult is replacing the clutch dog on this particular motor (MOD#10R74S - Serial#E3955289? <br />- Can it just be flipped around and re-used?<br />- Could it be something besides the clutch dog?<br /><br />thanks

Very likely you're in for a clutch dog and a new forward gear (you may have to buy the whole gear set of forward, reverse and the pinion gears, since they are only sold as sets for some motors). The problem you describe is typical of rounded clutch dog and machined gear recesses which causes the popping out of gear. This is usually caused by slow, careful shifting and the attendant clicking. Shifting should always be done promply and firmly to avoid the rounding issue.<br /><br />It's not a difficult repair IF you've done it before and have a shop manual. If not, take it to a dealer.

Hello.<br />Easy now.<br />Let's look for the cheaper reasons why this might happen first.<br />Are you sure your remote cables are properly adjusted?<br />In the top of your exhaust housing there is the connection between your shift lever and the shift rod.There is a simple screw there that sometimes loosens up,which will cause the shift rod to have some play and the result is inaccurate shifting and the dog getting out of place.<br />It is very worthwhile to check those simple things first.<br />good luck.

Rolmops, i dont think a 9.9 hp engine will use a steering wheel and shift cables. I believe its all hand control. I think.

i had a similar problem with my evinrude <br />lower units especially on smaller outboards are not hard to work on <br />however,when you take it apart sit components out on a rag or something exactally how they came apart ..<br /><br />Before you take lower unit apart make sure your prop is not bad. props are pressed on a hub much like a harmonic balancer is on a car engine<br />my prop was slipping from the hub and would slip out of gear after half throttle !!!!<br /><br />also if your clutch dogs are bad they cant be turned over and this damage is usually caused by too high idle or rpm when shifting into gear <br />when you shift into gear it should feel like when you put your car into drive <br /><br />i hope this helps you tom
