1991 5.8 cobra, changed controller to Teleflex CH1752P and CCX cables, shifts like a dream but I can't get but 2 5/8" travel out the cables. I have contacted vendor, and states that cable travel should be 2.9", therefore clutch dogs wont fully engage. It will shift into for and rev but when you throttle it bucks and kicks. Haven't run it long enough to do damage-I hope. I Have the original service manual (worth every penny I paid) and have made all adjustments by the book three times. Could it be the cable nest on the controller is wrong from the Manufacturer? All I think I need is another 1/2". I have tried to adjust the cable itself but all that does is lengthen the cable housing. Please someone help me, i've been working on this all season. Thanks a ton!!!!!

Most after market controls have 3 sets of holes for the throttle and shift cable ends. If you aren't getting full travel you may have used the wrong holes of have control for wrong engine/drive.

I have double checked and I have the cables in the OMC cable nest according to manufacturers install sheet.

According to Teleflex this is the correct controller, it shifts perfect.

If it shifts perfect, what's the prob?

I browsed the pdf of the 1700 series manual... wowee, there's a lot that could be wrong in there.... the nest for OMC is black - but so are some of the wrong nests..
Bottom line, if you don't get the specified "throw" to shift your drive, get that shifter off of there and get one that won't destroy your outdrive. Like a nice new or used OMC unit.

I like controls that have separate throttle and shift, but rare in side mount

just because the install sheet says so, doesn't make it right

there are many OEM service manuals that state false information, this is why there are revisions and service bulletins

according to your first post, it doesn't shift perfect

take the advice of previous replys and try a different hole or get a different controller to achieve the 2.9" movement you need

I'll try to use a different hole before connecting it to motor to see if throw changes. It shifts perfectly but kicks and bucks when you throttle up and put pressure or torque on the prop. The boat will idle and go all over the lake but wont accept any RPM increase.

One way you'll know for sure is to disconnect the lower cable from the mechanism just shift it by hand, clutch may just be shot.

Thanks Captain didn't think of that, I'll try that tomorrow. I've moved the cable to the next setting and I'm going to try that first then I'll disconnect it and try that. Thanks for the help!!!!!

Another thing to try in the driveway is to shift with the remote control and then take off the linkage back at the engine and see how much more you can move it by hand. You can do this with the engine off while someone turns the prop to make it easier to shift.

Re: clutch dogs wont completely engage

I want to thank all of you, I think I got it we moved the shift cable in the controller to another space and achieved the throw I needed for the shift to be complete. Took it to the small lake by me and tested it on the trailer and it seems to be OK. Motor ran for about 3 min and then died not sure if it is because of the angle of the ramp or now have a new problem. Will advise. Thanks again!
