Clutch dogs

Hi Gents!
My old 6340hp bigtwin has done me proud over the summer especially after the usual cooling problems that everyone seems to have at some time or other and replacing the coils etc. The only worry I have at the moment is the occassional jumping out of gear now and then. Thinking that this maybe due to worn dogs I was going to attempt (for the first time) replacing them. Is it a reasonably simple job to do and are any special tools required?
Regards
Tich

Yes it's reasonably simple and no, there is no special tools you'll need. Not unless you get into replacing the seals, etc.

You will need some fresh spagetti seal and a new o-ring for the seal carrier, in addition to some sealant. The old ones will be permanently quashed and re-using them invites leaks.

If a new dog doesn't solve your problems, it's possible to swap the forward and reverse gears. If you want to make a real project of it, you can improve the shifting action by drilling the propshaft for the detent ball kit. Have a look at lark2004's post here:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=035027#000006
The new dog should be grooved so neutral detents as well.
