Clutch fan ?

I've got a '68 corvette and the clutch for the cooling fan is shot. Question is I have a severe duty clutch left over from another project - think it would be ok (or better) to use than replacing the original standard duty clutch. I'm in pheonix so I think that the exta cooling can't be a bad thing??

What do you think?

Just my opinion but I would move to a fully electric fan and save the HP. .............. otherwise if the HD fit's go ahead and use it.

Don't know if a heavy duty clutch is going to cool any better, or just last longer in a tough environment. If the clutch you have works on RPM rather than heat, you might drive your self crazy with a fan constantly roaring at lower RPM's.

Like Bob said, electric fans look awful attractive these days. You free up power, because your not constantly swinging a fan. The kit's are usually fairly easily installed, and most of them have a by-pass switch, just in case you think the fan needs to stay on longer then it does automatically.

I guess the question you have to ask is do you want your vet to be vet correct. As a rule a vet is a light car and really does not need as much cooling as say a 3500 p/u would. So depending what the clutch fan came off of the kick in kick out of the clutch will be off. What you will probably find that the fan may never go into free wheel at high way speeds. Thus this will rob you of HP and sound like a air plane. Now saying all of that if you need one try it it may work just fine.

Thanks for the input guys. Turned out that the severe duty one I had did have a slightly larger bolt pattern. It does get a little warm in traffic here in phoenix during the summer, but it seems that these clutches go away slowly over time so my old one may have just been tired. Any way put on a standard one-hopefully get another 40 years out of it.
