Clymer/Johnson manuals?

I just spoke to an old timer at my coffee shop...He claims he has the Clymer Johnson manual for my motor. A 1977 Johnson 35hp electric start w/CD2 flywheel and ignition. Are the Clymer Johnson manuals the correct manuals to help me get some repairs done on my motor or are these the aftermarket manuals that people warned me to stay away from? I wasn't able to get any more information from the guy.

The Sealoc and Clymer manuals pretend to be a sufficient manual. They are not. You will find they cover many different hp models, so their information is spread over too many models to be specific. To with a factory service manual: outboardbooks.com. The only way to fly.

I take a different viewpoint. The aftermarket manuals do a better job of explaining how stuff works than the factory manuals. Let's put it this way--for the novice the aftermarket books are ok. The factory books are written for the dealer's shop, where is is expected the reader has at least a clue what he's doing.

Right now I'm using the downloaded PDF's from boatinfo.
It explains things well enough but sometimes I need the photos along with the description of the procedures. Often it tells you to loosen a certain nut or screw....Well...which nut or screw is that?
The images in these downloads is un-interpretable
I worked on VW'so as a teen....not much different except for the terminology. I don't want to waste time on clumsy repairs....I just wanna go fishing for cripes sake....lol

If I had all factory shop manuals to cover all the different motors that I do my library would be huge and worth more than all my tools and shop equipment. Yes I prefer the shop manuals but reading between the lines of Seloc and Clymer those manuals suffice, along with a little help from the good guys on this forum of course.
Thanks Guys.

There are omissions / mistakes in these manuals.----A novice may not be able to spot these mistakes.----Agree with Faztbullet.

I just went thru this with the recirc tubes on a 87 120 looper. The Seloc manual was totally worthless. The only diagram was absolutely unintelligible. However, it does make a nice surface to brace pieces when drilling on the ol drill press!
