well i gave up on my 1986 power trim , i rebuilt it and it work about a dozen times ,then last week on the lake the plug with the needle valve shot it to the lake. i know the snap ring was in place so i dont know what happen. anyway i bought a cmc power trim (had one on my other boat work great), what i was wondering if any body knows if the switch from the t handle will wire up to it , then i wouldnt have run new wiring and use the cheap switch came with it , plus i still have the old unit and a jack plate if any one is interested:D

Re: cmc power trim

Sorry to hear your woes. I could have fixed your old one from top to bottom for less than CMC. However, now that you have CMC then perhaps you would sell me the old core for a good price?

regarding switch. sure. if the CMC uses a three wire motor then you can wire directly. If the CMC uses a 2w motor then you can use the switch to control relays. Do you know whether it is 2w or 3w?

a three wire system should have one wire for ground, a wire for up, and a wire for down. your existing switch puts out +12vdc on blue for up and +12vdc on green for down. The black wire is a permanent ground. On many boats they just run a 6" jumper to engine case. On Force they run it back to console. Either way 3w is like two separate motors with a common ground. Each needs to be separate from the other. 2w simply reverses direction if you hook it up backwards.

so anyway ... a red wire, an up wire, and a down wire doesn't really sound like 3w to me. there is no common ground (black)

i wonder what acc does? what kind of accessory could there be?
hmmm .... check the owners manual and see if there is a trim position sensor. The acc wire might go to a gauge.

so here is what you do. assume for now that the unit has common ground. That means it has a metal frame and there is no ground wire. Ground is provided by contact between frame and engine block. (If so then you should run a grounding wire from block to transom brackets. Force engines don't have a direct and intentional ground to transom clamps).

if you haven't installed it yet then jumper battery negative to the metal frame. touch positive to "up" and see if it goes up. then try "down". If it works properly then it is 3w and you can wire it directly to your existing switch. check the amperage rating and use appropriate wire.

IF it is a 3w system (from above test)
your original force TnT took ground back up to console and used 12/3 cable. Your new unit uses engine ground and you will only need 12/2. If you figure out what "acc" is for then you can either run another wire or use 12/3. I would not ground acc unless the instruction manual specifically says to do so. My local hardware store sells 12/2 marine cable for $1 per foot, 12/2 SO cord for .60 per foot, and 12/3 SO for $1/ft. Any of them should work.

Re: cmc power trim

I put a CMC Unit on my 88 Force, about 5 years ago. It worked great and still does, sold the boat to a friend of mine. Never had another problem with the tilt and trim.

I also wired up the switch on the motor to run the T/T and just used the switch on the dash, that was already there. It worked fine, so I know it can be done. I forget what I had done on all the wires now, but it did work and still works.
