Forget buying a boat at all and join this outfit. http://www.freedomboatclub.com/

Nice Ad.

I'm familiar with the boat club deal. We've got several springing up all over the more popular lakes in central TX.

As I'm one of those mechanically inclinded people that doesn't need a $50k boat - I'm more than happy in one that runs $15-$20k, devoting $7000/year doesn't appeal to me. After purchase price, my ongoing costs are lower than average.. I live 2 blocks from the lake, I have a discounted slip, and I can maintain my own boat, if I choose to do so..

I understand the appeal to other people who want the boat "fun" without the boat "hassle".

I can understand your theory of how splitting a boat would cut some costs because most boat owners probably only use their boat once, maybe twice a month anyway (I probably use mine more)...

But, if you are mechanically handy, you may be better off getting a $10,000 boat instead of a $20,000 boat that you'd have to share.

I did a 3 way partnership on a large old Houseboat on Lake Cumberland. We divided all the weekends evenly, and made Memorial day, Labor Day, and 4th of July everyone times. We all had other boats, so the houseboat was tied in the closest cove we could find the whole time, and driven very little. We charged gas at the marina and paid our share. Once I went on a long trip, but paid my gas seperately.

I liked it and would like to do it again, with an old boat. I would like ac and a shower in the next boat though. Every third week is plenty for a houseboat when you have another boat.
