Coast Guard Certification

I just recently purchased a 1998 Stingray 192RS, and am a newbie to the sport. I want to know what all I need to get my boat Coast Guard certified.
Also, do I need to get certified or take a class to run light offshore?

I'm not sure what you are asking? Are you talking about the Coast Guard Certification about weight and occupancy? Are you talking about having the required safety gear? Are you talking about taking a Boating Course?

Regarding having the requried safety gear, in Ohio, it is a regulation from the Department of Natural Reasources and State Law.

Regarding Weights and Occupancy, that is set by the Coast Guard depending the boat. When I bought my current boat, it didn't have the Coast Guard Sticker and I had to call Rinker, give them the Hull No. and they sent me one.

In Terms of a boating course, I would suggest the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary Boating Skills and Seamenship Course. I took it back in 88 and it was great!

Boat Safety compliance goes by the state of boat's registration. You will need to check with your state to determine what you need for your boat. Operator certification goes by state as well. My personal opinion is, everyone should take an pass a boating safety course just to be certified to turn the key.

I can't determine what state you're in in order to help you with the Boat Safety compliance. We would also need to know the size of the boat to properly answer that question.

I did take the online class for Pennslyvania, but I want to run in the Chesapeake bay. Do I need to take Marylands class and get the boat Coast Guard certifed there. My boat is 19ft. I mainly am looking at safety gear.

No you're good. I live in PA and have boated on the bay also. Your safety gear may have to additionally include flares for the bay, not sure. This would be the thread to ask in http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=189770&page=81

Saefty Equipment regulations follow the state the boat is registered in. Safe Boating courses and certifications are usually dicated by the state your operating in. Check to see if a non-proctored, online exam will fly for an out of state resident boating in MD. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes not. The sites should indicate what is acceptible for transfer from out of state. If in question, call the appropriate authority in the state you intend to boat in for clarification.

If you have a boater cert in your home state (on-line PA boater ed course, for example), most other states will allow you to boat in their state without getting certified again (kinda like driver's licences - you have one in PA, you don't need a driver's license in MD).

On the Chesepeake, you will definitely need 3 flares, visible during the day and night. You'll also need to make sure you have PFDs for all on board, as well as a throwable. VHF radio is not required. Fire extinguisher. Sound making device (whistle/horn). Bow and all-around white light required. There's a whole lot more.
