Tahoerover,

Have you seen the newer designs? They aren't the best at making the most out of the available space in terms of usable room. They generally have overly-large engine hatch/sunpad areas which limit usable interior space. They also, as you mentioned, don't have the walk-thru transom on any of their new models (which could be debated for pros/cons). They just appeal to a slightly different market than the usual "runabout" boater. They are attractive, though, and do well in their niche market.

Torched, where are you located? are you really looking for a nice AND fast bowrider? Maybe a 500 hp 2003 225BR Crownie? right around 30k? 65 mph boat with a Bravo III?

Is it not VERY CLEAR that I am under duress? do you not see that I am being held hostage by a sinister Canadian plot to destroy my ego? is there no compassion for a fellow American Boater on this site!!

I too was looking for a excellent condition, recent model Cobalt...or Chaparral. Looked at some other brands but always came back to these two. 232 or 242 in Cobalt - OR- 256 or 264 in Chaparral actually. I kept telling myself not to drop the $$ on a new boat, which is alot!! I believe my patience in researching available boats paid off as I ended up with a 242 WSS brand new...well, demo, but basically new (full warranty) for alot less cost. Its still alot of $$, but I figured I would have this puppy for along time to come on! Happy hunting.

Well, the first thing I noticed when comparing the Launch 25 and Cobalt A25 is that they have the same amount of seating space, yet cobalt still retains the walk-thru transom and also has a small wet bar. They also feature reversible backrests on the starboard passenger seat and the aft sunpad, which allows for more seating configurations. The bow seats offer removable inserts to allow for more seating, whereas the chris craft has fixed seating up front. The point wasn't that you get a "bigger" boat by going with the Cobalt, it's just that, in my opinion, they are a bit more versatile in that regard. The swim platform is also a pretty cool feature which adds a lot of area behind the sunpad vs the ChrisCraft. They are both great boats and choosing one over the other is a matter of preference, really.

So I'm kinda bummed. Looking at older / larger cobalts and some nicer spec'd rinker captivas. I also found an awesome yellow Crownline LPX w/ 496 with low hours - 32k though so nearly 30% more than the cobalt.

Gotta pay to play I guess!

Should we assume the Crownline is newer? 496 and LPX are more a newer combination (mid 00's?)

I would put a Formula 24ft on the top of that list also, another well built big boat.

But as said before- it comes down to condition...

Re: Cobalt Boats - "stereotype" if you saw one cruising by..

Purchased an '87 cobalt last year for 2 grand, was never winterized correctly and left outsided uncovered for 5 years, so was taking a risk on buying something that could possibly be all rotted, checked the transom, was solid, pinged the stringers in some areas, solid. Got it home and started going through checking more thoroughly, only bad things were the motor and vinyl. Replaced the motor and over the winter re-upholstered the boat. The "t" nuts for mounting the back to back seats to the floor were rusted out on a few of the bolts so had to redrill new mounting holes in the floor and to much amazement the floor was solid all the wood is glassed in. Everything electrical interior lights, down to the cigarette lighters works. I would say cobalt boats, atleast the older ones are quality built boats. Not to mention called cobalt corporate office a few times with questions such as what wood was used in the stringers in case I found rot when I did the thorough check and they were able to tell me what wood was used in that year.
