Re: Cobalt merc. 250.

My neighbor took his '92 5.7 volvo (chev) apart. Being a 'car guy' he tore it down, put a more aggresive cam, some head work, intake and carb, electronic ignition... etc.
The sea trial with the gps before and after showed an increase of about 3 mph and it used more fuel of course. Worth it? I don't think so.

Not a good return on your money. Especially since GPS's are usually 2-3 mph off anyway, he may have less of an actual gain. I will freshen it up, and maybe do a little port work just to make it flow better. I appreciate the feedback. I will leave the blower on my Chevy II.:D

Feet perhaps... Since 'selective availability' was removed in May 2000, the GPS system is reliable to 0.1 mph...

I think you have it backwards, those pitot tube speedometers and paddle wheels only give you speed over the water and not SOG (Speed Over Ground). The GPS SOG is very accurate. Speed over the water can change due to current, waves, wind, etc. SOG is how fast you go from point A to point B.
