Cobra 262

We are looking at a 1989 seaswirl it has a OMC inboard with cobra stern drive and on top of the engine we think it had 262 on it with a picture of a Cobra. Is this concistent with the range of eninges avliable for that model. Would that be the size of the engine in cubic inches so what would that make the engine in liters- 3.3, 4.0 4.3? <br /><br />Thanks a lot, great forum

Yep, unless I'm reading my manual wrong, if it's a six cylinder it's the 4.3L. Other models seem to be either 4 or 8 cylinders.

I'd keep looking.OMC created the Cobra,but when Bombardier took over they dropped stern drives.That leaves Cobra owners without part support until aftermarket kicks in.Existing parts seem to be depleting.Try to find a V-6 exhaust manifold.(OSCO is working on it)<br /><br />DHP

OMC went out of the sterndrive buisness in 96, when they sold out to Volvo. Long before Bombardier was in the picture. Bombardier only took over the outboard (Johnson/Evenrude) part of OMC.<br />And Volvo never made any OMC specific parts either like exhaust parts, ESA parts, Cobra parts etc.

You should also look at the following link before making a decision. A great summary of Cobra sterndrive issues. As stated many times in previous posts, either be able & willing to fix a Cobra sterndrive yourself or make sure you've got a trusted, experienced OMC mechanic nearby.<br /><br /> http://www.funkopolis.com:8080/~stuart/cobra/ <br /><br />On the other hand, I've got a 17' 1989 Seaswirl with the 4.3L and it's been great. The only problems I've had with it had to do with letting a Merc shop service the outdrive, which they screwed up, causing gear damage. I did also crack one exhaust manifold years ago when I didn't ream out a drain plug. Thought all the water was out, in reality rust or sediment keep some in. Sounds like it's a good thing it happened back then instead of now. <br /><br />But DPHs point is a good one. I've haven't really needed repair parts in a long time and therefore I'm out of the loop as far as shrinking availability.

does the omc stern drive manual cover the engine as well? who makes this particular engine in the boat?. the drive is actually a kingcobra how heavy should the shifting be as the boat is new to us and we picked it up last night.<br /><br />Cheers

If you can't locate the OMC manuals, the Seloc manual #3404 will work fine.<br /><br />Also, for further reading on the Cobra drive, check out this link.<br /> Cobra Info

Benh, thats a small block GM engine. You really should check out the link Don or I posted for more info on the outdrive (they have the same info).<br /><br />And in case you're not aware of the following point, the most important thing I've learned from this forum is to be very careful before using auto parts on your boat engine. There are a few things that would be ok. But there are many that could put you at risk of blowing up your boat (literally) if you substitute the auto version for the marine one.<br /><br />Good luck with your new boat!
