Tilted my drive down today and outdrive oil spilled out from the prop. I pulled the prop off and saw the prop seal was fine. Its piling up behind that. Looks like a small pool in the exhaust area. Ive been looking at the tech drawings. A number of seals are there. Any common ones that go out? any way of fixing it without splitting the halfs? havent done that yet.

Howdy,

If you have a leak down there you might want to pressurize it and see what happens.

You probably have to reseal the drive. if one is leaking you probably replace them all.

Cheers,

Rick

I see seal kits for the lower unit. is there one for the upper unit as well? and is this something i can take on myself? I fix cars for a living and have had this drive off once before already. U-joints are also pretty rusty, not sure how important that is, everything spins fine.

Well, the first thing you should probably do is get an OMC service manual. There are some specialized tools that are required to take a drive apart and put it back together. It's also not something you might want to do if you don't have a service manual. Here's a bunch of OMC info that might help. http://www.sterndrive.info/

Some of the tools you can probably make. A lot of them turn up on ebay from time to time.

If the U-joints are rusty, the bellows probably was leaking water in there.

Have you changed the oil in a while?

Tried to reseal it, couldn't get the carrier bearing out for the life of me. Screw it, I took it in to shop. they quoted me three hours max

3 hours for a non saltwater unit, if its a saltwater unit be aware the labor can quickly double.
I spent 3 hours friday morning simply removing the carrier from a 93 200 yamaha unit.
took a lot of oxy/acetylyne.
also took some creative propshaft pulling.
also had to heat out the driveshaft housing bolts.
this all takes time, sometimes, lots of time.

I got it back, they charged me 3 hours, told me this was the last time it could be taken apart and the lower unit casing was so pitted they had such a hard time getting it to seal. And when it starts leaking again which they couldn't tell me, start looking for a new lower unit case. Hope it lasts me this season
