86 OMC cobra drive "seems" to pop out and back into gear while under way. Is this possible?? Or should I be looking for the "slippage" in another area.

It would be easier to check for slippage first.
Mark the prop and the hub, run it, and recheck your marks.
If they're not in the same spot...slippage.

Does it POP out of gear and seem to jump back in gear immediatly. You kind of hear a thump and feel it too?
If yes, then it's probably not a slipping problem of the coupler or prop hub. Besides, once they start slipping, forget moving over idle speed. Anything over idle and the slipage is worse. Lots of rpm, and no forward go.

Don't you hate it when that stuff happens?

Check to see if it's the prop with the line method across the hub if the lines don't match up after it happens again you need a new prop.

You could try putting a spare prop on and see if that fixs it, and i am hoping it's the prop.

That still don't fix it then it's time for a new cable.

Heres the link to adjusting the cable. Maybe you could just adjust it but when they go out of adjustment USUALLY they are bad.

However i saved the worst for last.

The clutch dog.

Thats the last thing to worry about do everything else and get back to us.

Oh did the temp spike up, did you notice. If your coupler was slipping the temp would go right up. The water pump stopped turning.

If the prop stopped turning then the temp would have stayed the same.

If yes,........................................

That's exactly what seems to be happening. Also, there also does not seem to be a pattern or tendency to it. It may occur several times in an hour, or not at all over a longer time.:confused::confused:

The problem probably started as a shift cable going bad and not quite making it all the way into gear to make a solid thunk when going into gear and possibly ratched a few times.
From there, the shift dogs round over and allow it to pop out of gear. Since it doesn't happen all the time, you might just be able to change the shift cable, get it adjusted "By the Book" and all will work. But still a good chance the shift dogs are rounded over and will require gear and shift dog replacement. It's a trial and error now, without dissassembly of the drive for inspection.

Thanks Don. That gives me a starting point.
