I just realized that when running on muffs, the exhaust water on my 1988 Cobra 3.0 does not exit the propeller, but dumps out through the pivot housing. Is my exhaust bellow shot or is this normal?

My cobra dumps both ways I would say normal. it dumps more at the bellows than it does thru the prop.

Yeah, there is a little out the prop but the vast majority spills out onto the front of the outdrive.

Yea dont worry mate there are slits in your bellows that allows the H2O to exit there, I thought the same thing the first time I put mine on muffs too.

Good. I was kind of confused because the water was coming out one place and the gasses were deinitely coming out of the prop. Now it makes more sense. The water is kind of sealing of the slits as it dumps out, so the gas takes the path of least resistance which is out the hub.

Re: Cobra Exhaust Water

What we're talking about here is the muffs that attach to a gardeen hose and slide over the water inlets of the outdrive to provide water when running the boat on land.

With that 302, if you want to gain some power and make is sound good, forget mufflers. Just get some stainless 3" pipes bent up and do a thru-hull exhust. You'll need to block off the outdrive exhaust opening under/behind the engine and hole-saw your transom though....

Re: Cobra Exhaust Water

Now would i have to put some sort of one way flap valve, on the exhaust end so as to keep the water out? and would i be able to use just some sort of "plug" to stop water from entering through the outdrive, if yes what would be the best spot to plug it at?

And as for going through the hull, i have a flat deck on the back, i would want it to be mounted under that , at idle it would be underwater, would i need to bend the pipe a certin way ?

also what is a good way to seal around the pipes if they will be close/in the water?

thanks for the help.

Re: Cobra Exhaust Water

Bondo has done this project on his V6 and could probably help you out. Try posting a new topic with the title "Thru-Hull Exhaust Project" and ask the questions there. I've never done it so I do not want to answer questions I have no experience with. I know you will need flappers on the ends of the pipes to keep water out, and I think someone makes block-off plates specifically for converting the transom exhaust on the outdrive.
