Cobra OD leaking gear oil above anode

I recently purchased a used boat with an OMC 4.3 and a "decent" 1987 Cobra upper and lower unit. The engine starts and runs well and the prop turns when put into forward or reverse BUT the gear oil leaks out rather quickly near the anode between the upper and lower unit. I added oil, hooked up earmuffs, ran for about 2 minutes and drained milky oil from lower unit.

Any ideas?

I attempted to remove the lower unit today but was not successful in disconnecting the shift rod. Any assistance with removing the lower unit without removing the upper would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

What outdrive and year is it. It sounds like time for new seals. A pressure/vacuume test will tell.

Sorry...its an 1987 Cobra outdrive. Any idea how much a small marina will charge to redo seals & gaskets? I have experience with engines but the sterndrives are all new to me. D/L the manual from this site and it has helped!

You must remove the total unit to get the lower unit apart.
