Cobra outdrive

1988 5.0L I am having some difficulty with the shift rod adjustment on the lower half of the outdrive. The service manual calls for
7 13/64ths". If I try to adjust to this dimension I am almost unscrewing the shift rod completely out. Section 8 page 45 of the manual. Could this be a mistake? I had no shifting issues last season and the rod is measured in the neutral position. Any comments?????????

You might be measuring it wrong, you don't measure from the top of the cover that the shift rod goes into, you measure form the top edge of the lower unit that the cover bolts on to....
keep in mind that the shift rod should be turned forward in actual operation but its turned sideways in this pic because that is the way it has to be to get the upper gear housing off.
