cobra water passage plug

New to boating, bought a 1986 searay with 4.3 omccorbra last spring, in the water. When pulled out for winterizing there was a homemade assembly where the upper gearcase port side screw plug was, the one covered up by a decal. Qustion: does this hole need to be water tight. Boat runs great. What to do for upcoming saeson. Thanks.

Probably because Nobody, including myself, has Any Clue as to just What you're talking about....

I know what plug he is talking about...
The one on the port side that never needs removed.
You have to remove the drive and fish the nut out that holds that screw-plug into place.
If not half the water from the passage will shoot out of that hole.
I have seen people use a rubber plug glued in with RTV sealant...
Have also seen a plug with JB Weld on them too...

That info really helped. The previous owrners were not do it yourself boaters. I am thinking that the local marina did the job. The boat runs very good. I am member of CG AUX.

No problem,
Many people have made the mistake of removing that screw.
The best bet is to remove the drive and fix it right.While the drive is off its a great time to grease the U-joints,shifter bellcrank and the drive shaft.
Inspect the bellows for cracking or any signs of water getting into the U-joint bellow.
That should be a yearly service anyway.
