Coffee... How to make it on board?

Dottie and I love our coffee every morning. Spending the night in our cuddy leaves us without it unless we stop at a marina. Of course, this involves getting EVERYTHING ship-shape again for our day, and by then it's just too late to enjoy the coffee. The time to enjoy it is when you get up and are wiping off the cob webs; from the boat the eyes.

So now we are looking for the right choice to make or re-heat coffee. We don't mind it being a day old, as long as it's hot. From the sounds of things I've read in the threads, there's no point in getting an inverter for a 120V coffee maker, so we are looking at the 12V 4-cup models.

While looking through the many sites, we also found a thermos that can gring your beverage to a boil, it comes with a mug that can also be plugged in. It scares me because the total price is under $10.00. USB cord as well.... The offer just sounds too good to be worth a darn.

I'd much rather spend the money for something that actually works!!!!

We don't have a lot of space, so we need something that can pack away when not in use. And yes, we are already considering a larger boat to enjoy a few more comforts, but that is another day.

We are hoping some of you have exerienced the good, or bad, and can help direct us to suit our needs/desire.

Have you considered a small propane fueled single burner camp stove and an old style 8 cup ceramic campsite coffee pot. Heat it over the flame and it perks your fresh hot coffee...

I may end up going that route because my older Day cruiser doesn't have any way to cook anything. Fairly small stove and coffee pot if you have some fresh water either onboard or bottled.

Just a thought.

Coleman camping stove to boil the water, french press style cofee maker to make the coffee?

My college roommate had a french press and it made some good coffee, requires no electricity.

Considered the propane burner, I already have the coffee pot that'll work from WAY back in my camping days. Could either make cowboy coffee or heat water for "baggie" coffee.

Just trying to come with the solution that consumes the least amount of space, too.

Also you might just head west on 24 to the Luvs in Rising Fawn and prowl around and see what they have for what you need. Truckers face the same delima we do.

You can also get a dual cig lighter adaptor for more than one use.

We keep the single gas burner, small stainless coffee pot, cups, creamer, sweetener, coffee in those "tea bag" deals with the strings on them, in a 5 gallon plastic bucket with a lid and "COFFEE" written on the lid, ready to go, quick, easy and awful good with some cookies and watching the sun come up!

If you can boil water, use a French Press. I have one and really enjoy it.

Great question. Does the water actually have to boil? I'm sure some water in a black bag will heat up fast in some seasons. I bet I can make ice easier here in the middle of January but I have a hot tank that must get up to 150 or 160. Would that work?

That's part of the original question... What is the most compact and reliable (by experience) way to make a hot cup of coffee?

The water does not have to boil if you just want "Sun Coffee". Water in bag, packets of coffee, placed in sun for a while should yield coffee, but it won't be like drinking fresh brewed "hot" coffee.

We may need to just invest in an item and try it... if no luck, then we'll try another. Rather not go with the propane fire since we won't always be on shore and don't really have a convenient place to use the burner on board; not with this boat, anyhow.

The sun coffee is a nice idea But they want coffee as the sun rises it sounds like. Dont think thats the answer

I'm not a fan of using open flames on a boat like sterno or coleman camp stoves, just too many variables, but that contraption Bubba has posted looks like it could be fairly safe .

I like my coffee hot too so I just might have to invest in one of those,

Two and a half cups in 30 minutes!!! Butane stove is way to go.

Yep, we love our morning coffee, too. We have a boat a little bigger that yours, 23 ft. We plan on doing some extended cruising when I retire in a few months. I installed an 1800 watt inverter. Coffee and home made bread.

Those 12 coffee makers do take forever to make 2 very very small 5 ounce cups.
Had one in the van for the overnite fishing trips. It took 15 minutes before the first water came thru the filter.
Threw it away.

Alcohol burner is the way to go on a boat.

Something like this. Non pressurized fuel.
Not heavier than air like propane is.

You can find some very small cook stoves that can heat water at any good hiking equipment store. They arent cheap but super small. super lite and super dependable.
