Re: Coffee... How to make it on board?

I to LOVE my morning coffee and I am usually up before dawn. Since I have a small camp stove on board, I use a small coffee perk like this one http://www.rei.com/product/401139 DAMN that's good coffee! And there is nothing nicer that sitting on deck with a hot cup of coffee watching the sun come up over the lake :D

Re: Coffee... How to make it on board?

looks like some good ideas here....

i don't have a cuddy cabin boat, but i do spend many weekends sleeping on board. and i do want my coffee the next morning too.

when i started sleeping on board the first notion was to go to the marina for coffee. well, i've had stronger water than what they serve for $2.50 a cup or whatever rape price they charge (been a while since i got some).

so. since i generally have my van pretty darn close to where i tie my boat up to for my over night. i make my coffee in my van. it has 2 batt. + an isolater and a power inverter in it. 1500w i think it is. probably a little on the low wattage side, but does work. if i had a big enough boat w/deul batt. i think that would be the ticket.

i do start my van durning the coffee making process. but that could be done in a boat too. or a bigger power inverter..

so far. i've not brought myself to bring propane on board due to the flammability of it. and i want heat too. like one of them heater buddys. but still don't have that either for the concern i have.

so if your tow vehicle is close and has 110v in it?
this has worked all summer for me. 2 summers actually... our super strong coffee sure beats the water the marina sells.
only draw back is, i gotta be close to my van and i gotta get up and walk a 100' or so to get to the fixins..

I'm in the same boat, so to speak. ;) Our usual solution is to dock someplace that we can walk to a restaurant for breakfast.
Of course the ultimate solution is to get a bigger boat! :D ;)

Unless you want to spend the money on an invertor, a 12V unit is the way to go.
I have one I use on the boat and when I'm out on the beach surf fishing. It takes 15 minutes to brew 2 cups of coffee but it bets packing up and heading into town for coffee.

We used to make some using a propane torch and some modified pieces from a percolator.

Remove all the electric parts and keep the heating well attached.
Add legs if needed
Use propane torch to heat the attached well and the coffee will perk as usual.
When finished turn off the torch and disconnect it.

If the percolator is a larger one the torch can be stored inside it and explosion or leakage risks are reduced.

Hey y'all,

"Our" boat got a present for Christmas, the 12VDC 4 cup heater from a truck stop in Knoxville -- heat up water to use on whatever you want. We've been very busy the start of this season and only this past weekend did we spend the night on board. All ready to go for the morning: potable water, check; coffee bags, check; coffee cups, check; auto-plug, check! Thought we'd cook Brat's to have with coffee. Wake up Sunday, start going through the list... ummm, "honey, did you pack some sugar and cream?" Oh NO! Off to the marina for coffee and breakfast... next time, we'll let you know.

Happy Boating!

I went with my final recommendation. Bought the bigger boat. Alcohol/Electric stove, microwave, 120v plugs for the coffee maker and a generator to run it all.:D

I drink coffee and wifey drinks tea, so we have a 12v hot pot.

Starbucks makes a passable instant coffee (called Via); just stir it into the hot water. It isn't the best coffee, but pretty good for instant and very convenient in the single serving packages. Really the only downside is the hot pot takes 20+ minutes to get the water up to temp.

Yup. Another good reason to trade up! Coffee just tastes funny on a 19'r...:p

Now that's how to upgrade your coffee pot! Great going :)

This is what I use on back country treks, MSR Pocket Rocket...

msr-pocket-rocket.jpg

Boils up a pot of water in just a few minutes.

Then I run a french press like Huron posted up there ^^^^^^. MMMmmmm, hot coffee!:D

I'd feel completely comfortable running it on a boat, in a tent, on a porta ledge, or in the kitchen:)
