I was looking at coffee makers yesterday and started remembering how good the old percolators smelled and the sound of them bubbling when perking. Is it my nostalgic imagination or did coffee taste better when it was perked instead of dripped through the grounds like with todays coffee makers?

Re: Coffee Makers

ae, I am definately with you on this. I love perc'd coffee. I guess when Mr Coffee came out it was the end of the percolators. It seems to me if they can put a timer on the drippers, why cann't they do it on a perc? And the very best coffee( smell and taste), is perc'd in a old fashioned metal one over a fire on the banks of the river!

every once in while I will get out my ss camping coffee pot and perk some up. My favorite coffee is coffee made in one of those big old electric peculators.

Try a drip coffee maker with a screen instead of paper filters. It allows more of the flavors to come through. The screens often come with the makers.

I found an old Corning, stove top model (circa 1960's) at a garage sale. Talk about real coffee! You can perk it as strong as you want. It too, has just the stainless basket, no paper filter.

When it comes to selling your house, statistics show that the smell of freshly brewed coffee and/or freshly baked bread closes more deals. Go figure.

Nothing like an espresso first thing in the morning, or at night, or with a grappa chaser or......

Roscoe... I remember that my mom had a big shiny stainless double pot like that ... Sunbeam I think. Water went in the bottom, coffee in the top , plug it in and the water went to the top and dripped back down to the bottom pot. Made good coffee.. and looked cool too. :)

Mmmm per'd coffee...
ok, that's it, I'm at work but I'm going for one now. How true it is about the aroma changing the ambiance of your home. I also use my cockpot a couple times a week so when I return home after work I walk through the door to the smell of a home cooked meal.
New thread...

Re: Coffee Makers

Roscoe
Yes they make new ones, but it's a different company and they don't make parts for the old ones. The only thing that goes out is the warmer element, (find one and hang on to it) one day I'll have to replace it. I searched, even called the manufacturer. There was a place in Tulsa (went under) that carried parts, last time I was in there I took the bottom piece of the pot with me and when I stepped up to the counter the guy turns and walks away, he brought back the part I needed and ask "is that all?".

Thanx for the info though!

I use an old Corning one like Xcusme (w/ the blue flowers). Don't even own a drip anymore.
