What is your favorite brand of coffee and where do you get it? I have become somewhat of a coffee snob recently and I cannot stand any of the Starbucks coffees. By this I mean the bagged whole bean coffees that they offer in most stores such as Publix, Wal Mart, Target, etc........

I grind my own beans and I have yet to find anything I really like. I prefer medium-strong beans like Sumatra and the best I have ever had was some Blue Mountain Beans I brought back from Jamaica (not to mention the cigars I got there :) ).

Where can I get something comparable to the Blue Mountain Beans without having to go back to Jamaica?

Please let me know what vendors you use and trust.

Re: Coffee

Here is a great site: texascoffee.com. Look under single origin coffees for Jamaica Blue Mountain, my VERY favorite coffee. :)

Re: Coffee

My fav is Folgers high test - Columbian or French. Although the prices have been high lately and I have been going with store brands. Once in a while, I'll treat myself to Eight O'Clock and grind the beans myself.

I like the starbucks "pike place". It's a mild blend, but I mix it STRONG. I am actually more interested in talking about the cigars you like!!!

Re: Coffee

My favorite is Tim Hortons up here in Canada. I like just regular 'blue collar' coffee. I was at Starbucks this AM for a meeting. You need a PhD in coffee to order.

I always just tell them I'd like a large coffee for normal people. None of this 'Grande' crap. And, I'm not overly impressed spending $3 on a coffee either.

But, I'll drink anything, no real preference.

Cuban Cohiba's were what I brought back (shhhh, don't tell uncle sam). Best cigar I have ever had. My favourit that you can get legally is a Spanish Rosado but the producer;s name escapes me right now......

Re: Coffee

Ethiopian (home of the coffee plant) Yirgacheffe Arabica :p

if I can't get that, then ...

... Jamaican Blue Mountain

About once a day a good strong Italian double Espresso is also nice.

Rather quality, than quanity.

Going to Starbucks for good coffee, is like going to Disneyland for a real wilderness adventure (I love Disneyland, but Starbucks is a joke).

P.S. I don't like the cheap robusta coffee beans that are increasingly being used in coffee blends. High quality robusta coffee beans used sparingly in specialty espresso blends is OK.

Re: Coffee

Some people like the way dirt taste so whatever you like best is the best for you. The very best coffie is made from whole beans that you grind at home and the beans need to have a dark and slight "oily" appearance to insure they havent dried out. Almost all of the bagged pre ground coffie thats cheap is old and very dry.......not what you want for fresh taste. Also you need to make it with an espresso machine and then add water . Best brand I have found is called SEATTLES BEST........its made by starbucks but its better.

Very true, that is the problem I have with Starbucks beans. They over roast them so they will last longer on the shelf and thus kill the flavor.

Re: Coffee

I am jealous.......... :)

Don't be. You can get the same taste and quality in the States, just not from Cohiba.

I also have some Cuban Partagas :D, they are the other famous dark brown Cuban delicacy.

The good thing about Partagas though, is that they also have a sister plantation in the Dominican Republic, just for the American market. Give them a try, I am sure you will like them. :)

Re: Coffee

I've also had a medium roast Kona in Maui and really enjoyed it. Again, I'm no coffee expert but it was a great blend and wasn't overpowering and didn't have a bitter aftertaste. Really good stuff.

(But then again, I was in Hawaii in Feb so the temperature was 80+ as opposed to in the -30 it was that week here in Ottawa so a lot of things were better:D)
