Re: Coffee

I drink a lot of coffee, but I'm not a coffee snob. No cat poop coffee for me. I drink Folgers at home and Eight O'Clock at work. I like it black and toward the strong side. Starbucks is bitter to me and overpriced. I don't care for the pretentious names of the sizes the coffee comes in either. As a general rule, most anything ground fresh is better than what I have at home. Even McDonalds coffee is really good to me.

We can get Jamaican Blue anytime from the coffee dealers here. They sale, on the premises fresh roasted “coffee beans” out of burlap bags, not “coffee brands”. If you want a blend you just tell them what, and how you want it to be blended.

The coffee dealer we buy from is now in the hands of the forth generation. They aren't fancy, don't use aromas or sugary syrups in their coffee, and when you order a coffee, that is just what you get, coffee.

250-500 grams of really good beans, cost about what two liquid brownish milky things from Starbucks cost.

And no fancy “pseudo European” names that Europeans never heard of till Starbucks showed up here. Just good, plain old, honest coffee. It taste so good, it is almost like a expensive desert.

P.S. What is it with America, the last time I was home, everything in the DIY/Home Improvement stores were called “Faux” something or other. Why don't they just call it what it is, fake. Why do we think if we give something a European name it is better. I hope I haven't just committed a "faux pas"!

Re: Coffee

Blue Mountain Coffee is certainly special. We order it directly from Jamaica. It's definely a Sunday Mornin coffee, but we all deserve to spoil ourselves at least once a week right? :)

Re: Coffee

I grew up on Luzianne Instant Chicory Coffee, there is simply none better. My fiancee has worked for a variety of coffee places that sell great coffee, but nothing starts the day and gives you a little extra pep like Luzianne. It will not only put hair on your chest but will probably strip paint also.

Re: Coffee

My son makes the best coffee I have ever had. He says that the temperature of the brewing makes more difference than the origin of the beans. He uses mostly Jamaican and Kona beans and some exotic German coffee maker that grinds the beans immediately before brewing.

On the cigars, mine is another vote for the Cohiba Habana Cuba. My son brings some to me every time he goes to the Carribean.

My son treats his Dad very well, thank you. :)

Re: Coffee

I was at Starbucks this AM for a meeting. You need a PhD in coffee to order.

I always just tell them I'd like a large coffee for normal people. None of this 'Grande' crap. And, I'm not overly impressed spending $3 on a coffee either.

Been ordering there for years and the word "grande" just gets stuck in my throat, and I spit out "large, please"....

Also, favorite mix of coffee is 3/4 Yuban dark roast and 1/4 Bustello or Pilon, both Cuban expresso coffees. A full pot of that in the morning and another to sip on thruout the day and I have NO FREAKING COFFEE PROBLEMS!!!!!!! :p:D

Re: Coffee

Some people like the way dirt taste so whatever you like best is the best for you. The very best coffie is made from whole beans that you grind at home and the beans need to have a dark and slight "oily" appearance to insure they havent dried out. Almost all of the bagged pre ground coffie thats cheap is old and very dry.......not what you want for fresh taste. Also you need to make it with an espresso machine and then add water . Best brand I have found is called SEATTLES BEST........its made by starbucks but its better.

I have gone through a few bags of Seattles best as well and was pretty happy.

in all honesty I belive the process, water temp and quality of water you use has more efect then anything. I only use a french press and grind my own. I run my water through a filter pitcher and always walk the water from the stove to the pot so its at Just the right temp when its added to the beans

I dont own an expensive machine or even a Mr coffee. I use a $12 French press and it makes stellar coffee.

That's for sure. While servicing security equipment in Starbucks stores, I was told more than once about the $15k water purifier and filter they used. Said they had some customers who would buy their water from them to get that just right taste....also, no coffee at Starbucks is sold after sitting for 15 minutes.

Re: Coffee

Well I'm of Cuban descent. BUT, I really like Eight-O-clock. I like the beans and grind them myself. I use a Black and Decker coffee maker that can make one mug at a time (or two). I always use bottled spring water, just because I never drink my tap water. I have tried the Jamaican blue at a gourmet store near my house, but just do not see the big deal. Some times I go to the end of my block and get Cuban style Cafe con Leche with Cuban toast to dip in it. It's a hardy breakfast. Some times I like a large shot of Cuban espresso after lunch. I don't even blink the rest of the day. The popular Cuban brand is Cafe Bustello.
I also like an occasional stogy, Cohiba or Arturo Fuentes is my choice. Always like to have one with me when I fish.
BTW both of my Grandparents on my Mom's side were Cuban immigrants and hand made cigars in Tampa's old factories.

Re: Coffee

I spent too long in the Army. Folgers classic and make it black.:)

This made me think of something. When my buddy went over to iraq about 2 years ago in one of his letters back to me he mentioned that their coffee creamer was crap and he missed a good cup of jo. So from that day on every time I went to get coffee I would grab a few extra of those little french vanilla creamers. Every few weeks I would send them. It was a nice little treat for him from back home. Well I guess word got out to his army buddies about them. Next thing I knew, he had his mom, dad, brother, myself, my g/f and anybody else we could think of grabbing a few extra every time we got coffee. We ended up supplying his whole unit for the remainder of their tour! It was a lot of creamer!!!!

Just felt like sharing that.

Re: Coffee

I' ve always found coffee from small roasters to be the best, and i have tried so many different types from all over, favorite was "field coffee" made from beans given to my unit by a grateful Iraqi woman, made by tossing pulverized beans in a mess cup and stuck in the fire..add some goats milk...it'll wake the dead, But there is one small coffee roaster in Brooklyn NY that's terrific, small batch..give it a shot - http://www.gorillacoffee.com/

Re: Coffee

Everyone's taste is different, and regional preferences are also significant. Years ago when I was in food services and catering, I really had to be aware of those regional differences. Back then, I really thought Stewart's Private Label was the best coffee I could get. Alas, since I changed careers I can no longer afford the premium coffees... and even if I could, I'd probably rather spend the $$ on gas for the boat:)

I've found Starbuck's to be burnt and bitter. IMHO Starbucks and McDonalds are both prime examples of the power of marketing over product quality.

Re: Coffee

What is your favorite brand of coffee and where do you get it? I have become somewhat of a coffee snob recently and I cannot stand any of the Starbucks coffees. By this I mean the bagged whole bean coffees that they offer in most stores such as Publix, Wal Mart, Target, etc........

I grind my own beans and I have yet to find anything I really like. I prefer medium-strong beans like Sumatra and the best I have ever had was some Blue Mountain Beans I brought back from Jamaica (not to mention the cigars I got there :) ).

Where can I get something comparable to the Blue Mountain Beans without having to go back to Jamaica?

Please let me know what vendors you use and trust.

I like the Sumatra dark roast a lot.
If you really like fresh coffee, you should try to find a coffee sales place where they roast their coffee on the spot, usually in 5 pound batches.
That way your coffee is really fresh.that alone greatly improves the taste.
The place where I get my coffee roasts their own on the spot, but they do not mix or blend. You pick your own type of beans from different glass jars. They weigh it and then grind it on the spot. That way you have the freshest coffee and instead of a mass produced blend, this one is exactly to your taste.
If you like a dark roast like Sumatra, you will probably love its close relative The Celebes coffee. This is from another island in the Indonesian Archipello.
By the way,Sumatra also produces great cigars.I do not know ifr you can get them here but they go by the name of "wild Sumatra"
