I have a 1971 55HP chrysler. As you can read my other threads, I am dead. I just removed the flywheel and noticed one of the pads next to coil, that rub on cam is not touching, not even close. Could this cause an engine not to start?

Re: Coil/felt pad

The felt pad is a wick that should be saturated with a drop or two of oil. Its purpose is to lubricate the cam so that the rubbing blocks of the point sets do not wear. There should be one felt pad on each set of points. they usually take a "set" and only touch the cam at the high point. Do not use too much oil! It will come off the felt and foul the points either causing burned contacts or insulating them.

The felt pad not touching should have nothing to do with starting problems other than excess oil getting into the points.

Yep Frank is right. I just learned all that from all the vary knowledgeable guys on this sight. change the pad ,but it has nothing to do with starting. Check spark, compression, condensers, points ,coils.
