Either install a inline resister or use an internal resister coil?

"The issue is even when the key is off"

Should NOT get hot with key off for sure. Check for 12vdc to coil with key off. If you have 12 at coil key off check your wiring again.

Re: Coil gets hot when key is on

You need to run the BLUE wire from the "I" terminal of the ignition switch to the blue position on the engine terminal and then to the POS of the coil. That way, when the key is off no power will be delivered to the coil. A white or white with black trace should go from the NEG of the coil to the distributor points.

If you have it this way and you are still getting power with the key off you need to check the ignition switch. "I" or "A" terminal should only have power with the key on.

Just curious: If the coil is getting power with the switch off, how are you stopping the engine?

Thanks everyone for the input! it is appreciated!

So is it possible for a bad ignition switch to be the cause of the coil constantly getting power to it?
