I have heard that coil can fail under heat yet be fine when cooled.
Is this a rare symptom and/or not really.

Yes it can happen. No, it's not rare. It means that it's time for a new one.

One of the tests I do for a suspected intermittent bad coil is to heat it up with a hair dryer while performing resistance testing.

Bad points will heat it up, stalls out 10/15/20 minutes..cools, runs fine again until..(see above)
