Coil how to check?

I have a 1985 35hp force.Ran down the river about 3 miles wide open while idling down motor cut off;Has anyone had an experience like that?

Bout all you can do is swap a known working coil for the one you beleive to be bad, if the cylinder that was firing is now not firing and the cylinder that wasn't firing is now firing your coil would be bad.

Just cranked it,took awhile....had to put in gear to keep it going wouldn't catch on it's own.I'm baffled!

May be old fuel and or trash in the tank, or air leaks in the fuel line, bad primer bulb, dirty carb, fuel pump in need of a rebuild.
