I have a 1986 125hp Force outboard. I am installing a new style ignition coil but it is used. The new style don't have any wire coming from it, how does it hook up to the CDI box? I am assuming I have to make some kind of jumper wire that hooks up to the lug on the coil. I don't want to try this unless I am sure. Is this correct? Thanks

Re: Coil install

If this is the type of coil you are using, then yes, you have to make a jumper.

What I did do is to cut the White/Red/Org wire with the black cylindrical connector off of the original coil making sure I cut it as long as possible. There is a small screw terminal on the replacement coil. It usually has a small eyelet attached to it. Solder the eyelet to the cut end of the wire you just clipped off of the old coil and insulate it with the small piece of heat shrink. The new wire then connects to either the Blue/Red or Blue/Org wire from the CD modules just like the original coil. There are two metal mounting tabs on the replacement coil. One of these is the ground connection. Can't remember which one off the top of my head but it's pretty obvious. Make sure this tab is making good contact on the coil mounting plate. Scrape off any paint or corrosion to insure good contact.
