I have a 1960 18hp Rude model number 15032. I have no spark on Number 2. How do you test the coil? My manual does not go into testing just changing. I also have the points and condenser kit. I already have the flywheel removed.

if the coil is discolored or cracked change it. actually if it were mine, and you have points and condenser, i would change both coils, and plug wires, and have a complete new electrical system.

Re: Coil problem?

You can do a rudimentry coil test with a multimeter. Check the resistance between the spark plug wire and the mag plate. Should be several k-ohms. If infinity, remove the coil and test between the prong that sticks into the plug wire and the mag plate. If still infinity, scrap it.

Sometimes the plug wires will arc through where they are clamped to the mag plate. Sometimes the coils do too.

Thanks I think I will just go ahead and replace everything. It will save headaches in the future.

Re: Coil problem?

Just wanted to thank you all, and a quick update. I have re-sealed the lower unit, replaced water pump and t-stat, rebuild carb, replaced fuel-pump and fuel lines, and replaced spark plugs, wires, coils, points, and condensers. This motor now runs like I think it should. I owe it all to the outstanding members of Iboats. Thanks again.
