im looking for a coil for my 100hp 1968 johnson outboard motor. the one that is on the motor now has a crack. the problem is i cant find one that will match the original! it looks like a coil off an old truck only shorter in length. all the coils ive
looked at for that year and hp look completely different! they say that it will work with pulse packs. how do i know what to buy? should i just trust what they
say to buy on this site for that yr and hp?

Re: ???coil question???

So you have the Johnson with a distributor on it correct? Sounds like somebody rigged the motor up with a truck coil or something like it I could be wrong.

If you are dealing with whomever with your with the correct model numbers in hand then they most likely are trying to sell you the right part.

I've looked on this site (this site shows diagrams for a bunch of motors).

http://epc.brp.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e&brands=ej&lang=e

and pulled up your motor and can't find anything describing a coil for that motor unless I'm over looking it. It must be pulse packs instead of coils, it makes sense.

Check it out for yourself by clicking the view parts catalog button then verify your brand motor and click on the year motor on the left hand side then it should bring up a list of horse power for that year, from there click on your horse power then click on your model number, then click on the distributor group. You can also get the part numbers off of the site that I posted above, this should give you better odds on finding the correct part.

Re: ???coil question???

The original coil was part number 381886, was a short epoxy molded coil, correctly called a "pulse transformer". It is superceded by 433659 "kit assembly, pulse xfmr". I don't know what the kit looks like. Obvioulsy it must be different so requires a kit to replace the original. Yes, when the motor was built it had a pulse pack.
