Another first time repair for me, been reading a few posts. Do I need a special tool to pull the flywheel so I can access the coils on this motor? If so, what tool and where do I buy it? Got a link?

be sure to get some #8 bolts....1/4 x 20 thread..as well as 3 #8 washers to fit...I use that HB puller as well

Re: Coil repair on 72 9.5hp

The problem with the harmonic balancer that everybody seems to like so much is that they are made for pulling steering wheels of the steering column and not to pull flywheels of crank shafts. It is quite difficult to tighten the bolts evenly and often there is sideways pull instead of even vertical pull. Uneven pull locks the flywheel in place instead of popping it off.
OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) developed the flywheel puller which I showed in my earlier post and you will find it in every work shop that services Johnson or Evinrude engines. It is true that they are rather expensive (about $80) but they will always pop that flywheel off and never strip the threads in the bolt holes. If you live in the Rochester,NY area, you are more than welcome to swing by with your outboard and I will pop that flywheel for you with the right tool.
The main difference is the thickness of the tools. The OMC tool is about twice as thick as the harbor freight tool. And of course the straight edges instead of the rounded edges on the harmonic balancer. The thickness ensures a good vertical even pull.

, aaron..that's the one..37824 ..I use 1/4 x 20 x 2 1/2 " #8 bolts along with #8 washers..take each bolt to the same depth into the flywheel..and start pulling...I've used this set up on 6,9.9 and 10hp...

The harmonic balancer puller is NOT made for pulling steering wheels and is perfect if heavy enough construction. I've been using one for over 30 years, mostly on motors over 100HP, and it's just fine. You need Gr8 bolts and washers, NOT #8 bolts, whatever that is. You need to find a harmonic balancer on you car or truck to see the difference. Granted, some of the recent ones aren't heavy enough, but for a little motor the HF one should do fine.

Shoot, that is mighty decent of you Rolmops!!!

I use a harmonic balancer to pull the flywheels and it has worked so far. But like you stated I worry a bit about uneven pulling. So I am very careful to make sure that the balancer is level.

So I am thinking about taking a piece of 1 3/4 to 2 inch pipe and tack welding it to bottom of the harmonic balancer so it pulls evenly. I will have to determine the height of the pipe after I measure length from the flywheel to the base of the harmonic balancer after the #8 grade bolt and washes are adequately screwed in and level.

By doing this, I think I will be able insert all the screws at the right depth consistently and maintain even pulling of flywheel.

Will try this in the Spring....too cold to mess with that now...brrr

On the bolts I use for My puller, I put electrical "shrink tubing"
to the proper length so the bolts won't go in to far.
I got a 1953 Johnson 10 hp that someone ran the bolts in too far and cut the ground wires off a pair of new coils and stripped out the puller holes!

Re: Coil repair on 72 9.5hp

i never thought of shrink wrap GREAT IDEA!!!
rolmops IS right it can be tough to get the balancer puller layed on there nice and straight especially if youve never used one or if you dont know what your looking at i used grade 8 1/4"x20 thread x 3" bolts home depot has em for a buck each and i have some THICK grade 8 washers that came off an exaust system i worked on theyre cupped on the top and when you turn em over they lay nicely in the slot of the puller
if you end up doing one of these yourself make sure you keep your hand on the puller and the flywheel -mine jumped about 4 inches high when it came off i thought i broke it as it was a loud SNAP

Re: Coil repair on 72 9.5hp

ok finally got to this, rented the puller from autozone and it worked like a charm. hell yeah. looks like all is well under the flywheel. needed some other parts, guy at the outboard shop told me they scrap a ****eload of these motors, due to "the exhaust" issue. what exactly is the exhaust issue and what can be done about it? i'm seriously determined to get this prick running so i'll do anything within and slightly beyond logical reason.

also is there a specific torque required to put the nut back on for the flywheel or do you just crank it down snug?

The torque is usually 40 foot pounds. (it might say what the torque is stamped on the flywheel)
